Volunteers Week

The work of volunteers makes a huge contribution to Winchester Go LD and the work we do.

Volunteering at Winchester Go LD can take different forms, including supporting our regular activities either in person or online; Walk & Talks with members; helping out at Go Social evenings and summer trips or supporting the organisation in the office or as a Trustee.

Volunteering with us – Martin Keys

Martin has been volunteering with Winchester Go LD through our weekly lunch groups and supporting our day trips.

We asked Martin what volunteering means to him

Why were you interested in volunteering with Winchester Go LD?

I have spent most of my working life in the NHS with a few years either side of this in the Scientific Civil Service. I finally retired from full and part time work at the end of 2016.

With my wife Helen, for about 12 years, we provided respite care for a young person with severe learning (and some physical) disabilities. I did wonder if the experience (and pleasure) of doing this could be of use elsewhere, hence I volunteered for Winchester Go LD.

What does volunteering at Winchester Go LD mean to you?

In the last few years I have helped out with Go LD I have a growing admiration for the resilience that members show in the face of the additional challenges that life throws at them.

What have you enjoyed most volunteering with Winchester Go LD?

I have helped plan and enjoy going on the nature walks.  I think it is really good for Go LD members to explore the green spaces around Winchester, it seems to me the members seldom get out of the city centre.  One year everyone helped make and paint bird boxes during an activity session, which we later visited in the woods.  There is a lot of enthusiasm for wildlife and learning about plants.  Last summer we discovered Ryan had an interest in plants and flowers, and was happy to spend time looking at them.  I’m  really looking forward to supporting the Go LD nature walk again in August.
